Thoughts on Movement, Mobility and Maintenance.

After attending the Movement, Mobility and Maintenance Cert with Kelly Starrett yesterday and teaching this morning I have a lot of thoughts running through my head.

First, I really appreciate Kelly’s organization of the material and the way to address these issues.

His mandate is to “get organized!”  Getting organized works on a couple of levels.  When performing or coaching a movement: 1) Set up.  Get people into the best set up that is possible for them.  Compromises will have to be made because people will not be able to get into perfect/ideal positions.  2) Mid-line Stabilization.  This is of paramount importance.  I have been realizing more and more recently that strict adherence to the midline is the most important thing and top priority.  Watching people lift we see that the midline is the first point of failure and the weak link in the chain.  This needs to be addressed and hammered home constantly.  3) Up stream/down stream.  The idea that after the midline is stabilized you look up and down the chain to see where restriction occurs.  4) Mobilize At the Point of Restriction.  Once you locate the restricted area, then you can mobilize that area using any number or techniques.

While I feel that I have been following this prescription, I certainly have never codified it or really broke it down to the essential components. I feel that having this check list is crucial to better understanding how to coach movements and address faults.

Proper mechanics underpins all our intense efforts. To the extent we improve mechanics and the most basic level, we will improve performance.
